Leaders of the state Democratic Party on Saturday endorsed a western Pennsylvania judge and an eastern Pennsylvania lawyer for two open seats on the statewide appellate courts.
The Democratic State Committee threw its support behind Allegheny County Judge David N. Wecht for Superior Court and Doylestown lawyer Kathryn Boockvar for Commonwealth Court, party spokesman Mark Nicastre said.
Wecht, 49, the son of nationally prominent forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, was picked over fellow Allegheny County Judge Robert J. Colville after it became apparent that Wecht had the required two-thirds majority, Nicastre said.

Boockvar, 42, edged out two other prospective candidates for Commonwealth Court _ Pittsburgh lawyer Barbra Behrend Ernsberger and Scranton lawyer Todd Eagen.
The Republican State Committee is slated to consider its endorsements in the appellate races Feb. 12 in Harrisburg.
